65 Beautiful Kitchen Design Ideas You Need to See

kitchen design photos

When your kitchen is predominantly white and sleek to boot, choosing a wallpaper is actually a dream. Because a white kitchen is a blank canvas and therefore pretty much anything goes. They work particularly well in this light and bright kitchen extension – bringing color and texture into what would otherwise be quite a traditional kitchen. We love the Mid-century vibe of this kitchen –  the oranges and yellows are have a retro feel that just makes the space feel sunny and fresh.

Think about the positioning of a kitchen table

Consider adding a thick rug pad underneath yours to prevent slipping and add some support to your knees when you're cooking. If you love subway tile but long to make it a little more interesting, consider arranging your tiles in a new way. Bespoke Only chose a step ladder pattern for this kitchen, but herringbone, vertical, or other groupings of tile are great options too.

Channel the lean green, well-being look

When designing a kitchen, coming up with a color palette is often the hardest part. Going all-white is safe, but sometimes it can feel a little dull. If you're craving something more exciting, remember that blue and white are always timeless. Whether you choose navy or light blue tones, you really can't go wrong.

Personalize IKEA Cabinets

Again it's a job you can do yourself too if you want to keep costs down, and will only take an afternoon. Just check out our guide to how to tile a backsplash for practical steps. Choose a color or a pattern that could start a whole new color scheme in your kitchen. We love how this blush pink works with the sage green – a color combo we will definitely be trying out ourselves. You don’t have to wait until your appliances are broken to replace them. One of the most effective ways to modernize a dated kitchen is to upgrade the appliances. It’s a big investment to replace all the appliances at once, so identify your biggest pain point — like a refrigerator that’s always crammed full or a microwave that cooks slowly — and start there. You don’t have to completely gut your space and do a full renovation to modernize your kitchen.

Panel your kitchen walls

You might not typically think of your kitchen when you think of sconces, but trust us—it can work. This photo is case-in-point that adding a pair of sconces flanking a set of shelves can make a modern kitchen feel more intimate. We know light kitchen cabinets might have you thinking back to your parents' kitchen in the '90s, but Proem Studio proves that light wood cabinets are back. When paired with flat-panel doors and modern brass hardware, we're happy to welcome this trend back into the fold.

Stone can be an investment –but it will last as long as your kitchen does, longer in fact and brings such a lovely farmhouse feel to the space. There are loads of colors and tones to choose from too, from a dark grey to something like this warm beige. You can lay them how you like too, make more a feature of them by laying different sized slabs or keeping it simple with a square pattern. You can add color with decoration but keep the bones of the kitchen nice and neutral. All white kitchens are bang on trend at the moment and they are classic, they won't date and they give you a nice blank canvas to change up the overall look as styles come and go. If you are the kind of person who likes to change their home often with the trends, a white kitchen would be the way to go.

If you want more cohesion, stick with the same finish but switch up the type of pulls. Floating shelves are a practical yet stylish way to fill empty space on kitchen walls. Use them to display your carefully curated collection of coffee mugs, cookbooks, or houseplants. Inspired by early 20th-century factories, this contemporary kitchen combines steel, stone, and wood for an industrial-chic look that doesn't feel cold. The massive island provides plenty of prep space, plus seating for four. The marble effect splashback looks great with the soft green units and teamed with the wood you get an all round natural feel from this kitchen.

It has brilliant matte blue cabinetry with a modern aesthetic to it that goes perfectly well with the stainless steel elements and black countertops. This kitchen is part of a great room that also houses the informal dining area beside it under the same white ceiling and warmed by the same fireplace inlaid with white bricks. This matches well with the light beige cabinetry of the kitchen with brown tiles that look like wood.

While designing a kitchen may sound daunting at first, you will quickly get the hang of it. Our platform makes the process as simple as it can possibly be. You can cut directly on them, they won't dull your knives as quickly as other surfaces, and they're easy to restore with mineral oil. So often we forget that a kitchen can be beautiful as well as functional.

What Is a System Design Interview? Grokking Modern System Design Interview for Engineers & Managers

grokking the system design

By looking at the SDI as a way to showcase how you perform as an engineer, a collaborator, and an employee, you can more holistically demonstrate your talents. There are tons of resources available to you to learn System Design, but if I were a beginner developer I would start here on Educative. Our System Design resources are created specifically to get you interview-ready. Make sure you understand low-level, object-oriented design first, and then you can get started prepping for your eventual System Design interview. As a result, their engineering teams are concerned with multithreading and concurrency-related topics. Staff and principal engineers take their design conversations beyond the forecasted requirements of the system.

Possible questions for every SDI

In this chapter, we highlight the different aspects of a system design interview (SDI) and some helpful tips for those who are preparing for an upcoming interview. We encourage learners to read this chapter even if they aren’t preparing for an interview because some of the topics covered in this chapter can be applied broadly. Senior engineers can discuss the inner-workings of every component in a software system. Working with a team of engineers, they design a system to be scalable and resilient. But because we received so many fantastic questions from attendees — far more than we had time to get to during the event — I wanted to write a blog to answer even more of the best and most commonly asked SDI questions. Knowing how to leverage caching mechanisms like in-memory caches and content delivery networks (CDNs) can significantly improve the performance and scalability of your systems.

Solution of Frequently asked System Design Questions

The best way to approach a System Design Interview is to structure the conversation around the acronym RESHADED. It represents a high-level strategy for designing just about any system from the bottom up. Fault tolerance ensures that the system continues to function even in the presence of failures. It involves implementing mechanisms such as redundancy, replication, and error handling to ensure that the system can recover from failures and continue to provide uninterrupted service.

Tips for Maximizing Success with Grokking the System Design Interview

It’s never too early to learn system design to grow or even expedite our careers. A certificate or a bootcamp may help you get an interview, but it’s not likely that the professional or university certificate programs cover the specifics of a system design interview in detail. Certificates help develop problem-solving skills and other technologies you’ll need in a software development profession, but when it comes to interview prep, there are more specific resources available. Microservices segment a system to achieve independence from one piece to the next. This helps large-scale applications stay modern and scale later in their development. Interviewers are more interested in the sustainability of the design than your aptitude for scaling.

It involves designing the system in a way that allows it to efficiently scale up or down based on the demand. The course offers comprehensive coverage of system design concepts and principles and real-world case studies that provide practical insights into the challenges and strategies involved in designing large-scale systems. In recent years, the importance of system design interviews has grown significantly, as it helps companies to identify candidates who can not only write good code but also design scalable and efficient systems.

Is Grokking the System Design Interview worth it? Review

You should be prepared to discuss how they work in tandem to meet the requirements set forth by the interviewer. Thankfully most SD interviewers know that junior engineers won’t have the practical experience to dive in-depth and explore a system like more senior candidates can. So, some of the best things that junior engineers can brush up on are the individual components of a large-scale system. Depending on your specialization of choice, your interviewers will bend the SDI to more acutely test your abilities.

Breaking down the System Design Interview: 20 things engineers want to know

The ability to adapt and iterate on your design is an important skill in system design. Be receptive to suggestions and be prepared to defend or modify your design choices based on the feedback you receive. Break it down into smaller components and identify the relationships and interactions between them. Consider the different layers of the system, such as the front-end, back-end, and database layers, and how they will communicate with each other.

When evaluating different approaches, it is important to discuss the trade-offs of each option. For example, in the distributed messaging platform, you might consider using a message broker like Apache Kafka for its scalability and fault tolerance. However, this approach might introduce additional complexity and overhead. Discussing these trade-offs demonstrates your ability to make informed design decisions.

Understanding different partitioning strategies, such as range partitioning and hash partitioning, will help you design systems that can handle large volumes of data efficiently. These methodologies provide a structured approach to designing systems and offer various benefits and trade-offs. So, if you are an aspiring professional looking to excel in system design interviews and secure a job at a top software company, Grokking the System Design Interview is definitely worth considering. It really helps if you have an idea of the architecture, as the questions asked will generally be of that domain and your prior knowledge will help out here. After the introduction, you’ll move on to sixteen independent sections, each covering a building block of modern system design. Instead of teaching you what design solutions are the best for a given situation, we will discuss the principles that underlie individual design elements that make up a design solution.

Sure, we understand Pythagoras’ theorem, but we’re baffled when it comes to the CAP theorem. Educative‘s interactive, text-based lessons accelerate learning — no setup, downloads, or alt-tabbing required. Join the Educative community of learners, and develop a solid foundation in system design. We’re proud of all the work that went into making Grokking Modern System Design for Software Engineers & Managers and can’t wait to see the impact it has on your career. You’ll be taught how to apply every step of the RESHADED guideline to all of the design problems in subsequent course modules. There isn’t a universal, one-size-fits-all formula for solving all system design problems.

While it is not crucial that TPMs be stellar coders, it is important that they conceptually understand the system that their team is working on. In order to effectively do their job, TPMs should know the relevant software building blocks but also how they fit into the larger system. As we mentioned earlier, most interviewers know that a majority of applicants don’t have real-world experience building scalable systems. Companies want to be sure you’re equipped with the technical skills required to do your job, so by researching ahead of time, you can stay one step ahead of your interviewers. Take the time to review your performance in the system design interview objectively. Assess your ability to understand requirements, propose a scalable and robust design, and communicate effectively.

By leveraging the resources mentioned above and actively engaging in hands-on practice, you can build the skills and confidence needed to excel in system design interviews. While the course has some limitations and the pricing may seem steep, the potential return on investment in terms of securing a job at a top software company justifies the cost. By following the tips for maximizing success and supplementing your learning with additional resources, you can significantly improve your chances of acing the system design interview and landing your dream job. This course review is aimed at helping you make an informed decision about whether or not Grokking the System Design Interview is the right course for you. In this review, I will discuss the importance of system design interviews, provide an overview of the course structure, and share my personal experience with the course. I will also compare Grokking the System Design Interview with other popular courses available in the market, and provide some tips on how to maximize your success with this course.

If you’re a software engineer who hasn’t dealt with big scale distributed systems or isn’t familiar with scaling software, this course has a reasonable possibility of getting you a raise at your next job. This text-based, interactive system design course is one of the best in the market. Thousands of people have gone through this course to learn essential system design concepts approaches and see the solution to frequently asked System design questions.

Remember there is no single answer; the only important thing is to consider tradeoffs between different options while keeping system constraints in mind. It is always a good idea to ask questions about the exact scope of the problem we are solving. Design questions are mostly open-ended, and they don’t have ONE correct answer, that’s why clarifying ambiguities early in the interview becomes critical. Candidates who spend enough time to define the end goals of the system always have a better chance to be successful in the interview.

For example, Java developers who want to become software architects can join this course to improve their knowledge of software design and system design. This pattern may be seen throughout the course since it is applied to each question. They have carefully selected a collection of questions that have been regularly asked by top organizations, and they also provide extensive experience in dealing with any system design challenge. While the pricing may seem a bit steep, considering the potential return on investment in terms of securing a job at a top software company, the cost can be justified.

Left-hand navigation uses “push-buttons” to get you from one page to the next. In addition the site features circles to house all of the text against a busy backdrop, so you know exactly where on the screen to focus. As user interface tools, circles seem to work best when used as part of an overall minimalistic design scheme. They need room to breathe, be identified and make sense to users. When used in this way, circles can be a nice alternative other types of navigation. Sometimes the whole idea behind using a circle is just to be different and make something stand out from the crowded landscape.

If you pair it with a hand-lettering font that has round edges, you’ll add consistency to the visual. Look at this great movie poster and get inspired to use colorful circles and create a pattern. If you feel like your design is getting out of hand and feels too crowded, go for a pop of color. Choose a bright color for the circle and keep everything else black and white.

But be careful, using too many circles can create a look of instability or chaos because every element is begging to be seen. They are fluid, and connected to movement and mobility (think about the wheel). Because circles are a part of the natural world – the shape of the moon, flowers, fruit – the object is considered real and represents life. Use a geometric circle design along with an indicator of progress (numbers or percentages) to draw attention to your ad.

When these spirals are placed side-by-side, we can appreciate how much smoother and more perfectly circular they are when the base has a higher number of points. As the angle of the turnings becomes smaller (first it was 180º for each, then 120º, now 90º), the spiral becomes smoother. Move to the next point, adjust the opening and draw the next arc. The House of Wisdom: Baghdads Intellectual Powerhouse

baghdad house of wisdom

It has been recognized as a factor that connected many different people and empires because of its educational and research components. The House of Wisdom has been accredited and respected throughout Islamic history and was the model for many libraries during and following its time of function. A large number of libraries emerged during and after this time and it was evident that these libraries were based on the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. These libraries had the intention of reproducing the advantageous and beneficial characteristics that are known throughout the world because of the House of Wisdom. Under al-Mamun’s leadership science saw for the first time wide-ranging research projects involving large groups of scholars. In order to check Ptolemy’s observations, the caliph ordered the construction of the first astronomical observatory in Baghdad (see Observatories section below).

Period of decline

Beginning in the early 1990s, traditional patterns of recreation for city residents were disrupted by war and economic hardship. Although a prosperous class of government and party officials and wealthy merchants continued to frequent private clubs, most residents spent their free time either at home or visiting close friends or relatives. The Muslims are divided, however, between the two main sects of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shiʿah. Non-Arab ethnic and linguistic groups include Kurds, Armenians, and people of Indian, Afghan, or Turkish origin.

The Abbasids’ House of Wisdom in Baghdad

Great Muslim scholars exchanged ideas, created inventions that would radically change society, and translated philosophical works from the Greeks, the Persians, the Europeans, the Chinese, the Indians, and the Sumerians. The father of Arabic prose, he translated and adapted a wealth of works from Persian, including his renowned Kalila wa Dimna, an adaptation of the ancient Indian collection of tales and fables Panchatantra, which would inspire the 17th-century French poet Jean de La Fontaine centuries later. It was even said that translators were awarded the weight of each successfully completed book in gold.

When Baghdad was centre of the scientific world

Rashīd Street in downtown Baghdad is the heart of this area and contains the city’s financial district, many government buildings, and the copper, textile, and gold bazaars. South of Rashīd Street a commercial area with shops, cinemas, and business offices has spread along Saʿdūn Street. Parallel to Saʿdūn, Abū Nuwās Street on the riverfront was once the city’s showpiece and—as befits a thoroughfare named for a poet known for his libidinous verse—its entertainment centre. During the 1990s the street lost much of its old glamour, and its cafes, restaurants, and luxury hotels either closed or suffered from a loss of business.

Among the academy’s leading lights were Al-Kindi, who commissioned the transition of Aristotle, and Hunyan ibn Ishaq, who translated Hippocrates. It was a time of great learning in the Muslim world, which stretched from Spain to China. Men and women of different faiths and cultures studied science and wisdom of ancient cultures adding to it and making breakthroughs that had a lasting impact on the European Renaissance. During the Golden Age, our region contributed some of the greatest inventions and scientific wonders of the modern world. We are rekindling the spirit of knowledge, glory and hope that inspired the region during this time, and we need you.

About 1001 Inventions

Works translated at the House of Wisdom include Aristotle’s books Rhetoric, Poetics, Metaphysics, Categories and On the Soul, as well as Plato’s Republic, Laws and Timaeus. The philosopher apparently urged the caliph to preserve the knowledge of ancient civilisations by gathering classical literature and sponsoring translation. The second was to dispatch missions to emperors and other rulers throughout the empire to facilitate the gathering of valuable manuscripts, such as the 2nd-century astronomical treatise by the Greek scholar, Ptolemy, whose English name, Almagest, derives from its later Arabic translation.

Baghdad’s Libraries Were So Impressive They Astonished European Scholars

In modern times the library became a symbol of the scientific enterprise and imperial glory of the early Islamic period. It is frequently imagined as a centre of scholarship and collaboration for the greatest minds in Baghdad and its environs as well as the heart of a robust translation movement of Persian, Greek, and Syriac literature into the Arabic language. The libraries that have flourished following the example of the house of wisdom's have had their doors open to scholars from all over the world. Libraries have had almost the same kind of translated books that were culled from scholarships of dozen languages.

Arabist Dimitri Gutas posits in his 1998 book that “House of Wisdom” is a translation error from Khizanat al-Hikma, which he asserts simply means a storehouse, and that there are few sources from the era during the Abbasid Era that mention the House of Wisdom by the name Bayt al-Hikma. This theory is debatable, owing to the destruction of the Round city of Baghdad and conflicting sources in both academic texts and poetry. It is likely, given the Abbasid Caliphs’ patronage of the arts and sciences, that an extensive library existed in Baghdad, and that scholars could have access to such texts, judging by the volume of work produced by scholars centered in Baghdad. Without consistent naming conventions, a physical ruin, or corroborating texts, the phrase “House of Wisdom” may just as well have been a metaphor for the larger Academic community in Baghdad rather than a physical academy specializing in translation work. The House of Wisdom grew rapidly with the acquisition of texts from Greece, Persia and India, swelling with the addition of the Arabic translations of these texts, a process that was already becoming an industry in Baghdad. This growth would have gathered pace with the use of paper, the production of which the Arabs had learnt from Chinese prisoners of war, as a new and cheaper writing material replacing papyrus and parchment.

The end of the center of knowledge

The term ‘algorithm’ is derived from a Latin version of al-Khwarizmi’s name which is ‘Algorithmus’. He was instrumental in introducing the Arabs to Hindu numerals and algebra so he is known as “The Father of Algebra”. Additionally, al-Khwarizmi wrote about the astrolabe, sundial, and elaborated on Ptolemy’s geometric model. Al-Khwarizmi is also known as the first geographer of Islam with his famous Picture of the Earth treatise. In Picture of the Earth, he arranged the coordinates of hundreds of cities in the world at that time and gave instructions for drawing a new map of the world. George Sarton, one the most famous historians of science known for his book, Introduction to the History of Science, called the period between 800 and 850 AD “The Time of al-Khwarizmi”.

There are many religious centers distributed around the city including mosques, churches and Mashkhannas cultic huts. All these men are no less worthy of mention in the history of science than Aristotle, Galileo, Newton or Einstein. People from all over the Muslim civilisation flocked to the House of Wisdom – both male and female of many faiths and ethnicities.

(MJ & AS, pp. 254 & 255; NM, p. 129) Such cities included Mosul, Basra, Shiraz, Rayy, etc. (Encycl. of Islam). The languages which were spoken, read and written there were Arabic (as the lingua franca), Farsi, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek and Latin; also occasionally Sanskrit, which was used to translate the old Indian manuscripts in astronomy and mathematics. The House of Wisdom was also referred to as Al-Hikma Bookstore (Khizanat Al-Hikma), and The House of Wisdom Bookstore of Al-Ma’moun (Khizanat Dar Al-Kutub Al-Ma’mouniya). It should be pointed out that the Arabic term Khizanat Kutub, meaning literally a bookstore, is an old name meaning a present day library. Foreseeing the impending tragedy, the Persian astronomer Nasir al-Din al-Tusi ( ) saved several thousand manuscripts by moving them to the Maragheh Observatory in northwestern Iran, built by Mongol ruler Hulagu in 1259. The Assyrian scholar Yahya Ibn al-Batriq ( ) translated all the major works of the ancient Greek physicians, including Galen and Hippocrates.

Beginning in the 1950s, the government used increased oil revenues to develop manufacturing industries. Some of the important cultural institutions in the city include the National Theater, which was looted during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but efforts are underway to restore the theater.[134] The live theater industry received a boost during the 1990s, when UN sanctions limited the import of foreign films. As many as 30 movie theaters were reported to have been converted to live stages, producing a wide range of comedies and dramatic productions.[135] Institutions offering cultural education in Baghdad include The Music and Ballet School of Baghdad and the Institute of Fine Arts Baghdad. The Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra is a government funded symphony orchestra in Baghdad. The INSO plays primarily classical European music, as well as original compositions based on Iraqi and Arab instruments and music. Baghdad is also home to a number of museums which housed artifacts and relics of ancient civilization; many of these were stolen, and the museums looted, during the widespread chaos immediately after United States forces entered the city.

The architecture of the city ranges from traditional two- or three-story brick houses to modern steel, glass, and concrete structures. The traditional Baghdad house, usually located on a crowded narrow street, has latticed windows and an open inner courtyard; a few fine specimens from the late Ottoman period are tucked away in traditional quarters of Al-Karkh, Ruṣāfah, and Al-Kāẓimiyyah. The typical modern middle-class dwelling is built of brick and mortar and has a garden and wall. At this point Baghdad was ruled by the Il-Khanids, part of the Mongolian Empire centered in Persia.

Instead of repressing what remained of Sasanian society, al-Manṣūr absorbed it into the new bureaucratic structure and portrayed Abbasid rule as the revival of the Sasanian empire. The current conducted research has a very original contribution since previous studies on the House of wisdom have only dealt with historical backgrounds of some libraries. The paper contributes in highlighting the extent of creativity for authors that had flourished due to the House of wisdom in which book authoring took a very progressive trend. It also adds new historical and factual contribution to studies on the administrative and managerial aspects and the way they function in the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah) that was later assimilated by several libraries in the Muslim world.

In the 1970s the government attempted to curb “horizontal” expansion, and a new phenomenon, high-rise apartments, appeared. The Western community, once substantial, has been reduced since 1958 and is limited mainly to businessmen, members of the diplomatic corps, and executives of foreign companies. Likewise the city once was home to a large community of foreign Arabs, including hundreds of thousands of Egyptians. A large modernistic shield, built by Khālid al-Raḥḥāl in 1982, commemorates the Unknown Soldier. The Martyr’s Monument, a 150-foot (50-metre) split dome built in 1983, commemorates the casualties of the Iran-Iraq War (1980–90).

He then formed a library that were referred to by the name of “Bayt al-Hikma”.Books written in Greek, Latin, and Persian in the fields of medicine, alchemy, physics, mathematics, astrology and other disciplines were also collected and translated by Muslim scholars at that time. Remarkably, the Umayyads also appropriated paper-making techniques from the Chinese and joined many ancient intellectual centers under their rule, and employed Christian and Persian scholars to both translate works into Arabic, and to develop new knowledge. These were fundamental elements that contributed directly to the flourishing of scholarship in the Arab world. On 14 July 1958, members of the Iraqi Army, under Abd al-Karim Qasim, staged a coup to topple the Kingdom of Iraq. King Faisal II, former Prime Minister Nuri al-Said, former Regent Prince 'Abd al-Ilah, members of the royal family, and others were brutally killed during the coup.

It became a provincial capital controlled by the Jalayirid (1400–1411), Qara Qoyunlu (1411–1469), Aq Quyunlu (1469–1508), and Safavid Persian (1508–1534) – (1624–1638) empires. Thousands of architects, engineers, legal experts, surveyors, carpenters, blacksmiths, diggers, and labourers from across the Abbasid Caliphate were brought in to survey, measure, and excavate the foundations. "They say that no other round city is known in all the regions of the world," according to Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi. Four equidistant gates pierced the outer walls where straight roads led to the center of the city.

Arabic in the Sky: Astronomy a thousand years ago

The stars and planets were perceived to influence events on earth and astrology was thus carried out with the greatest attention to detail. Bayt al-Hikmah, like Baghdad itself, was greatly enriched under the reign of Hārūn al-Rashīd (786–809). Patronage of the arts and sciences—and, of course, luxury—poured in not only from the caliph but also from the viziers and the other courtiers. The House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah) had influenced not only similar public libraries, but a new form of libraries that were for personal use and for show. One writer has estimated that some private libraries were bigger and richer than public or private, libraries in Western Europe.

Notable intellectuals

He also promoted Egyptology and participated himself in excavations of the pyramids of Giza. Al-Ma’mun built the first astronomical observatories in Baghdad, and he was also the first ruler to fund and monitor the progress of major research projects involving a team of scholars and scientists. Throughout the 4th to 7th centuries, scholarly work in the Arabic languages was either newly initiated, or carried on from the Hellenistic period. These works used a set of ten symbols to represent numbers-not letters of the alphabet, as in Baghdad and Rome.

At least half of the country’s large-scale manufacturing and much of its smaller manufacturing is located in the Baghdad governorate. The exception is heavy industry (petroleum, iron, steel, and petrochemicals), which is situated near the oil fields in the north (Kirkūk) and the south (in Basra and Al-Zubayr). Most economic activities are owned or controlled by the government, which both stimulates and monopolizes the country’s economic activities. War and economic sanctions contributed to the steady erosion of the city’s economic base beginning in the 1980s. As the city expanded physically, the government offered parcels of land for a minimal fee to various professional associations. Thus doctors, lawyers, army officers, and those of other occupational groups have tended to concentrate in new neighbourhoods, each with its own mosques, shops, and schools, creating a pattern of cities within the city.

Machines from the East: Mechanical innovations from Muslim Civilisation

Baghdad is situated on the Tigris River at its closest point to the Euphrates, 25 miles (40 km) to the west. The Diyālā River joins the Tigris just southeast of the city and borders its eastern suburbs. (See Tigris-Euphrates river system.) The terrain surrounding Baghdad is a flat alluvial plain 112 feet (34 metres) above sea level. Historically, the city has been inundated by periodic floods from the Tigris’s tributaries to the north and east. These ended in 1956 with the completion of a dam on the Tigris at the town of Sāmarrāʾ, north of Baghdad, and the ending of the floods has permitted extensive expansion of the city to the east and west.

When Baghdad was centre of the scientific world

Bayt al-Hikmah had its own system but sources have not stated a precise description that bind the system that the house of wisdom used to function. Caliph Al-Ma’mun is said to have encouraged translators and scholars to add to the library in the House of Wisdom by paying them the weight of each completed book in gold. People from all over the Muslim world flocked to the House of Wisdom – both male and female of many faiths and ethnicities. Most of Iraq’s manufacturing, finance, and commerce is concentrated in and around Baghdad.

To the north, urban expansion has absorbed the old townships of Al-Aʿẓamiyyah on the east bank and Al-Kāẓimiyyah on the west bank. Another group of buildings dates from the late 13th and 14th centuries (the Il-Khanid and Jalāyirid periods). These include the minaret of the caliph’s mosque (1289), the ʿAqūlī Mosque (1328), and two superb buildings constructed by the Jalāyirid governor Marjān ibn ʿAbd Allāh—the Marjān Mosque (1356), partly demolished in 1946, and the Marjān Khān (1359), a restored caravansary (inn). The Wasṭānī Gate, the only remnant of the medieval wall, has been converted into the Arms Museum.

Initially, it may have begun as a private collection by the second Abbasid caliph al-Mansur in the mid-8th century or as a library under Caliph Harun al-Rashid in the late 8th century, evolving into a public academy and library under Caliph al-Ma'mun in the early 9th century. For much of the Abbasid era, during the Islamic Golden Age, Baghdad was the largest city in the world. Its population peaked at more than one million people.[3] The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. Whenever you look at a map, gaze at the stars or take down a phone number, think of Baghdad.

Why were there so many inventions?

The sack of Baghdad put an end to the Abbasid Caliphate, a blow from which the Islamic civilization never fully recovered. Baghdad gained significance on 3 January 2020, when Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike at Baghdad International Airport. This is a list of notable people related to the House of Wisdom and the rise of Arab science. By measuring the position of the sun and stars, they could precisely tell the time of the day or night, or predict the moment when the sun would rise in the morning. The House of Wisdom also housed an observatory which facilitated astronomical advancements, leading to refinements of such scientific tools as the astrolabe. A point has to be made here about the term Medieval frequently used in civilisation literature.

At its height, Baghdad was estimated to have over one and half million people living in the city.[19] It may have been the largest city in the world during that time. As the capital of the modern Republic of Iraq, Baghdad has a metropolitan area estimated at a population of 7,000,000 divided into neighborhoods in nine districts. It is the largest city in Iraq, the second-largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo) and the second-largest city in West Asia (after Tehran). The Tigris splits Baghdad in half, with the eastern half being called "Risafa" and the Western half known as "Karkh". The land on which the city is built is almost entirely flat and low-lying, being of quaternary alluvial origin due to the periodic large floods which have occurred on the river. A major contribution from the House of Wisdom in Baghdad is the influence it had on other libraries in the Islamic world.

And the reign of Ma'mūn was notable for more than just the scholarly writings of these individual geniuses. Not satisfied with setting up his seat of learning, Ma'mūn ordered the building of the first astronomical observatory in Baghdad around the second decade of the ninth century. This was the only way his astronomers could check the accuracy of the various, often conflicting, Greek, Persian and Indian astronomical texts at their disposal, most notably Ptolemy's Almagest. Ma'mūn was almost fanatical in his desire to collect all the world's books under one roof, translate them into Arabic and have his scholars study them.

It was home to the House of Wisdom, an academy of knowledge that attracted brains from far and wide. Its destruction by the Mongols in 1258 led to the dispersal of its vast collection of manuscripts, with some being saved by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. The loss symbolized the end of an era in Islamic history, highlighting the fragility of cultural and intellectual centers in the face of conquest and destruction.

A good designer will know how to balance these three components to make the text both eye-catching and clearly legible, even for those with visual impairments. Often, designers will test this by viewing the text in greyscale (without color) and making tweaks if the text is too dark or too light against the background color. Many UI designers create margins to ensure that their logo, header, and body of the text are aligned with each other. Decorative typefaces are excellent for allowing the user to show off even more personality, feeling, and uniqueness with their font choice.

Here are the five fundamental principles of typography that all designers must follow. If you’re selecting a typeface to be used in just one context—for example, a one-off printed poster or a digital ebook—you only need to ensure that your chosen typeface works in that specific context. Examples of script typefaces include Lobster, Pacifico, Quintessential, and Handlee. Serif typefaces feature these decorative little lines or “flicks” at the end of the main strokes of each character.

The primary aim of typography at this level is to make the reading easy since the font size is usually small. Generally, the designers create an impactful hierarchy in a design by adding three different levels of typography. This is the one that viewers see the first distinctively visible typographic element in your design. But the wrong choice of typeface and font will not help in leaving a desirable impact on viewers or customers. So, to grab customers’ or visitors’ attention, first read the text completely so that you get a unique idea of how it should be incorporated and integrated into a design such as a website.

And, in the context of digital products like websites and apps, it makes the interface much easier to learn and navigate. If your design includes different pieces of information that vary in importance, you need to style each piece of text accordingly. At the same time, think about your audience and the message you’re trying to convey.

If you're not sure how much line spacing to use, don't fret—the default is usually fine. Too much or too little spacing, as in the example below, can make things unpleasant for the reader. Leading (rhymes with wedding) is the space between lines of text, also known as line spacing. Hierarchy is used to guide the reader's eye to whatever is most important.

Also, keep in mind that just because optical kerning will work fine for a certain typeface, doesn’t mean it will be the best choice in all situations. Even though in most cases we can get away with applying tracking, we sometimes need to get in there and tweak the space solely between two letters. These “kernable” gaps will most commonly appear around letterforms like A, W, V, T. In the mid 1900s Helvetica was created, setting the bar for Transitional sans serifs.

Hierarchy is about guiding the viewer’s eye to the most important element on the design, such as website design. The designer uses the typography to decide where a visitor should read first. To create hierarchy, the designer uses font size and typeface to catch the eye and drive the attention to the most important information.

A key component of HMCT programming is a series of rotating exhibitions. HMCT houses three exhibition spaces at South Campus, including the South Campus Gallery, the HMCT Storefront and the Archival Showcases. These exhibition spaces display notable work in typography, letterform design and visual communication from the HMCT archives, ArtCenter students, faculty and visiting designers. In today's digital-first world, understanding how typography works on screens is essential.

In the third year of the program, students will complete the Junior Portfolio Review. Recommended electives include Ergonomics for Design, Acting, and Architectural Project Materials. The BA Program culminates with the BA Senior Project, worth three credit hours. The College of Arts & Sciences at University of San Francisco (USF) houses the Department of Art + Architecture.

These letters are uniform and more rigid than the previously used ones, lacking the hand crafted element. With the rise of advertising in the 19th century, Egyptian or Slab Serifs were introduced. Thanks to their bold appearance and heavy serifs, they were the preferred style for displaying commercial messages. Do you ever notice the line spacing on the list of ingredients on the back of a crackers package?

Based on this analysis, it could suggest mockups that resonate with the intended audience. For example, a logo with a playful font might be paired with a vibrant, cartoon-themed mockup, while a minimalist logo could be presented on a sleek, modern phone case mockup. Designers could iterate rapidly on mockups, testing different concepts and receiving instant feedback without interrupting their design flow.

In the digital age, typography is more important than ever for creating engaging and user-friendly websites. Logos are often the first point of contact between a brand and its audience, and typography plays a crucial role in creating a memorable and recognizable identity. Leading (pronounced "ledding") refers to the vertical spacing between lines of text. Proper leading ensures that lines of text are spaced optimally for readability. Too much leading can cause text to appear disjointed, while too little can make it difficult to read.

We see it almost everywhere we look – on websites, street signs, food packaging, promotional posters, in the videos we watch, the books we read, and really, just everywhere. From magazine layouts to brochures and posters, print designers rely on typography to convey information and captivate audiences. Airbnb, on the other hand, uses a friendly sans serif font and playful illustrations to create a welcoming atmosphere for users. Similarly, the Coca-Cola logo is instantly recognizable worldwide, thanks partly to its iconic script font and distinctive red color.
